Politics of Vomit: Kwankwaso, Ganduje and Kano Base shifting

Kwakwanso dumps APC for PDP

Well, it has been long time coming! There can never be two governors in a state at the same time. One must leave town for the other.

The case of Kano is peculiar if not bizarre ..but then, in Nigerian politics, nothing is unimaginable. No two powerbrokers have ever been in the same party in the state. Dr. Kwankwanso of the PDP lost the election to the Shekarau (a former teacher) of the ANPP in 1999. It remained so till 2014 when the leader of the Kwakwansiyya movt decamped (along with 4 other govs) to an already formed Kano APC under the firm grip of Shekarau's ANPP. With Kwakwanso's incumbency, Shekarau was intimidated into joining PDP, a party he's never been part of since 1999.

Fastforward to 2015, Ganduje, a relatively unknown person in Kano corridors of power broking and Kwakwanso's deputy (2011 - 2015) was anointed as the new heir of the Kwankwasiyya throne against the better judgement of other "senior men". Of course, Ganduje turned out to be the nemesis of the former minister of defence. The red-cap movt is now disarray in a calamitous magnitude only out-shined by the destruction of the "Ebe-ano" family of the Chimaroke Nnamani's Enugu by his anointed successor, Sullivan "wife-beater" Chime, SAN.

In fact, in a far reaching if not hysterical "wipe-out-kwakwanso's-legacy" assault, red caps were politically banned in the state as it signifies solidarity with the embattled governor-turned Senator. Ganduje took many other political, bureaucratic and administrative measures to eternally erase the legacy and footprints of Rabiu Kwankwaso ...details of which are out of scope here.

We have had similar stories in other states where outgoing governors successfuly groomed, anointed, imposed and installed a supposedly subservient successor. You know the stories. Soany of the successors turned into an overnight nightmare for their groomers. Cases of Chime/Nnamani (Enugu), Saraki Snr/Lawal (Kwara), Kachalla/Sherrif (Borno), Kalu/Orji (Abia), Uba/Ngige (Anambra), Duke/Imoke (C'Rivers), Yerima/Shinkafi (Zamfara), Sheriff/Shettima (Borno), Akume/Suswam (Benue), etc are typical examples of godfather/godson ruinous relationships. Certainly, there have been cases of smooth and obedient relationships but in such cases, the whole 4 or 8 years are xterised by mutual suspicion, subdues emotions and wanton wastes of state resources for personal imperial tendencies. Tinubu/Ambode (Fashola went rogue later 😂), Akpabio/Emmanuel, Oshiomole/Obaseki, Saraki Jnr/Ahmed, etc are examples of such.

Nigerian politicians typically suffers from what I term "power hangover". While in office, he suffer extreme paranoia of what would become of him after power when the influence, incumbency and access to public til must have been constitutionally lost. Hence, he would start scouting for an unambitious appointee that can be manipulated, controlled, harassed and removable to take over from him. Power hangover makes him want to remain relevant politically after leaving office. Another consideration is to cover his tracks of corruption and misuse of office while selling the cheap crap story of "continuity" to the public. One of the ways to remain relevant is to either run after senate seat or become a minister.

Back to Kwakwanso! I sincerely look forward to how he will cohabit PDP with his political rival, Ibrahim Shekarau. PDP is the same party he swore was dead and stinking and would never rise again. Isn't that akin to going back to one's vomit? Well, our present day politicians have never shown disdain for political vomits.
